The Great H1 Debate

I was recently reading a post at the Viget Engage Blog about the upcoming debate about the placement of the h1 heading HTML tag.

It seems to be just making some noise by now but I remember like for months ago reading blogs, someone just stopped and wondered if placing it at the website title was really a good ideia and made me wonder too in that time and since then I started to follow the title placement option.

Now it has become something bigger, with a website (http://h1debate.com/) tracking peoples votes on tweets and we decided to speak our mind too. Go #h1title!

Both h1 placements follows the same principle: As the first heading, it should point to the most relevant item on page.

Some people just decided: Well, my company logo is what comes first on the page so it must be the most important thing. – Yes, it may be more important than the rest but I doubt if it is more relevant within the content context. The logo placement worked well because people often promoted the content title to the h2 tag thus creating a relevancy pattern on the page where all the titles have the same weight and no other content (except the logo that is not content) has a bigger heading tag.

I get the SEO more strict. I think my company logo or site name has no relevance within my true content (an article, for example), neither my menus and banners so I get my heading tags strictly at the content area and making the other items almost only to be followed.

Well, there are several questions involved that empowers both sides.

Check out Josh Chamber’s post at Viget for some of the questions.

So, speak your mind! Title or logo?

  1. I’m currently in favour for using <h1> for the logo on the front page of the site. On all other pages I use <h1> for the most prominent heading and a <div> for the logo.

I didn’t always think so, as you can read in my article Ultimate Site Logo but once I found the true path I wrote Ultimate Site Logo 2 – For real this time where I propose the solution described above :-)
